It does this in three ways: a measurement framework for early-stage companies to benchmark their ESG performance; an annual programme of events to provide start-ups with training and best-practice to achieve their ESG goals; and a bank of insights and resources to learn more about ESG.In July 2021, ESG_VC launched its measurement framework with the support of the British Venture Capital Association (BVCA). This framework is now being rolled out across the portfolios of more than 20 venture firms across Europe, who will be providing the BVCA with industry-level data on the ESG performance of venture-backed businesses. Over time, ESG_VC intends to ensure that portfolio companies are provided with resources and tools to ensure that they will be able to become more sustainable, more diverse, and better corporate citizens. The initiative is free to access for any venture firm, including members of PEWIN, and their portfolio companies. In turn, Beringea has also made substantial investments in the past twelve months into businesses with a clear environmental or social purpose: Social Value Portal, a tool for measuring and maximising social impact, received £3m from Beringea in September 2020; Commonplace, a digital platform for gathering community insights on developments to their local area, secured £3m from Beringea in July 2020, and Beringea also led a $6m investment into Utilis, an Israeli-based start-up using satellite data to protect water resources globally amid the climate crisis. As well as these investments, Karen continues to work with entrepreneurs within Beringea’s portfolio through the fund’s portfolio programme, the Beringea Scale-Up Academy and across the wider venture capital ecosystem to embrace the push for sustainability and diversity.|
